Nissan to bring D22 Navara out of retirement

NISSAN Australia will pull the superseded D22-series Navara one-tonne ute out of retirement early next year to sell alongside its replacement, the D40 Navara.

The “new” D22 will arrive in March 2008 with minor front-end styling revisions and a version of the D40’s (126kW/403Nm) 2.5-litre turbo-diesel engine - in place of the previous 110kW/314Nm 3.0-litre unit.

It will be offered in 2WD and 4WD single-cab model variants and in 4WD dual-cab ST-R guise. As before, the D22 will be positioned below the D40 range.

“When D22 discontinued, we believe it cost us 1000 units per month,” said Nissan Australia managing director Shinya Hannya.

Built in Japan, the D22 sold alongside the new D40 when it was launched two years ago as Nissan Australia could only get a limited supply of dual-cab D40s from the factory in Spain.

The D22 was discontinued late last year when its 3.0-litre engine was no longer compliant with the latest emissions regulations. The D22 continues to sell in markets in Asia, Africa and New Zealand.

Nissan will finally launch single-cab and "king-cab" versions of its D40 Navara in mid-2008.
