IN a world of full-time 4WD vehicles, the Patrol stands out as one of the few genuine off-roaders relying on a simple, part-time four-wheel drive system. The Patrol uses a two-speed transfer case that is operated by a second shift lever on the centre console to move between two-wheel and four-wheel drive. Part of Nissan's argument is that full-time 4WD tends to be less economical on fuel and tyres. The bottom line is that the big Nissan lacks that added security of 4WD traction on rain-slicked road surfaces - although 4WD can be selected on the move if the driver wants.
