JUST like how video killed the radio star, emissions regulations have tossed the naturally-aspirated flat six-cylinder engine from beneath the rump of the Porsche 911 GTS.
The new-for-2017 991 Series II returns in 911 Carrera GTS Coupe, 911 Carrera GTS Cabriolet and 911 Targa 4 GTS guise, with the first two body styles further available with ‘4’ all-paw traction. But the 3.8-litre does not return, flicked for a 3.0-litre turbocharged unit of the same cylinder count.
Porsche’s GT3 racecars-for-the-road have long been as anti-forced induction as the Turbo has obviously been pro-boost, and this time the GTS sides with the latter (as well as the entry 911 and S versions introduced more than 12 months ago) by adding a lower-case ‘t’ to its spec sheet.
First (re)introduced with the 997 generation in 2010, the GTS badge continues to stand for something more than S but less than a GT3 in the 911 range. But has turbocharging forced this circa-$300,000 blend of road-goer and racecar to change for better or worse?
