PORSCHE continues to make exceedingly clever use of its base car-building elements: six-cylinder boxer engine, versatile, rear/mid-engine platform, interchangeable bodywork and mechanicals. With this basic template, the company gives us three distinctly different sports cars – 911, Boxster and now, the Cayman coupe - a Boxster with a roof that equals much more than the sum of its parts. It’s said to be the best handling Porsche, and who could argue with the combination of the mid-engine dynamics of the Boxster and the torsional strength and light weight of a coupe? It offers an enhanced, 911-style experience for a quite a bit less money, yet brings all the usual virtues of flawless quality, tough as nails structure and arguably the most glorious engine sounds in the world. Porsche’s problem may be some real cannibalisation of 911. The perfect scenario for the Cayman would be a complementarity bringing new customers into the fold. Let’s hope that’s what happens.
