Making a splash with Splash

BY BRUCE NEWTON | 30th Dec 2003

THIS piece of automotive wackiness is called the Rinspeed Splash.

You know Rinspeed, the Swiss tuning firm that makes its money out of hotting up Porsches and headlines by rolling out crazy concepts at international motor shows.

On home turf at Geneva next March, Rinspeed will show us Splash, which is in part car, boat and even airplane.

That’s right, according to Rinspeed’s media release, the Splash can actually “drive, swim and fly across the water”.

The unique aerial feature is made possible by a “sophisticated and foldable high-tech wing system” powered by on-board hydraulics and electronics.

The two-seater Splash is powered by a light-weight two-cylinder 750cc engine which runs on compressed natural gas and has been turbocharged to produce around 100kW.

Rinspeed claims a top speed of approximately 200km/h on the road and 50km/h on the water.

Oh yeah, over water it can do 80km/h.
