SAAB'S original 900 dated back to the 1967 99, although it was a thoroughly reengineered car by the time it arrived wearing that badge in 1979. Fast forward to late 1987 and Saab unveiled the 900 Turbo 16 Cabriolet two-door convertible (to use its full name), a car that - like the BMW 3 Series - was very much of its time. Initially powered by the top-line 118kW turbo engin, a less powerful non-turbo 103kW 2.1-litre model, known as the 900i Cabriolet, sat underneath it from 1992, just as the early '90s recession was really hitting its stride. The appealing thing about the original 900 convertible was that it seemed to adapt happily to its role as a sun-chasing grand tourer despite being based on a car that was fundamentally 20 to 25 years old.
