NISSAN MAXIMA 4D SEDAN (1995-2000)
THE V6 engine is a gem - powerful, sewing-machine smooth and economical. The styling is uninspired, the interior spacious and well made and equipment levels impressive. Dynamically, the Maxima lacks the finesse of its Japanese counterparts - but what an engine.

VOLVO 8 5D WAGON (1994-1997)
VOLVO'S first front-drive car has gutsy performance and good fuel economy from its twin cam, five-cylinder engine. A good-looker, the 850 makes a virtue of its boxy shape with lots of useable space for people and luggage. Safe, well equipped and ageing nicely. Although it lacks the chassis finesse of its Euro rivals here, the 850 is a most pleasant car.

HONDA ACCORD 4D SEDAN (1993-1997)
THE last Japanese-built Accord has a grace missing from the current model. Refined, well packaged with a roomy interior and high quality trim, the Honda has ample power - as long as you wind the revvable VTEC engine - and excellent fuel economy on its side. Light weight helps. The range-topping VTi-S is also well equipped. Servicing and parts may be costly.

AUDI A4 4D WAGON (1998-1999)
A SPACIOUS family-sized load-lugger is not what the Avant is about. Instead, the A4 is an elegant, pint-sized wagon with beautifully executed quality, a solid, stylish, well equipped interior and excellent road manners. The efficient 1.8- litre four lacks torque, needing big revs for decent performance, but is a capable cruiser.
