THE industry statistician may well have lumped it into the medium-car segment but the Skoda Octavia Ambition has been priced to take on the segment below as well.

The Ambition has been sharply-priced to land it right in the meat of small-car terrain, leaving a solid step up to the other variants in the range.

But the entry-level Octavia is in the segment dominated by the Mazda3, Hyundai’s i30 and Toyota Corolla (as well as its Golf cousin) and where the Rapid has had little impact.

Skoda’s base Octavia Ambition stands ready to make more waves, with outputs and space to rival the medium segment but fuel use and footprint to make it a viable small-car choice.
