SsangYong talks Tradie

SSANGYONG has slashed the admission price of its Sports Dual Cab utility range by $4000 by releasing a new entry-level workhorse version called the Tradie – available only in white.

Priced at $24,990 (4x2) and $27,990 (4x4), the four-door turbo-diesel Tradie sets a new low water mark for the South Korean brand, matching or bettering many Japanese diesel single-cab and four-cylinder petrol twin-cab models, and undercutting Australia’s least expensive dual-cab diesel by $1000 – the Mahindra double-cab Pik-Up 2.4 ($25,990).



The third Sports ute variant is powered by a 104kW/310Nm 2.0-litre four-cylinder common-rail turbo-diesel that claims class-leading combined-cycle fuel consumption of 8.1L/100km, but fewer features than the Sports 4x2 ($28,990), Sports 4x4 ($31,990) and the flagship Sports 4x4 SPR ($39,990).

The five-speed manual-only Tradie still comes relatively well-specified, however, comprising twin front airbags, air-conditioning, power windows, remote central locking and cloth trim.

A tray liner is also standard and rear coil springs deliver a 750kg payload, but unlike other 2008 Sports variants the Tradie comes with steel wheels and drum rear brakes. The Tradie also misses out on front side airbags, traction/stability control and ABS.

“Clearly there is a demand for a vehicle like this that has less of the creature comforts and a lower price for those seeking a more basic and less luxurious vehicle,” said SsangYong Motors Australasia managing director, Russell Burling.

“The Tradie proves that you don't have to compromise comfort or safety in a basic dual-cab ute for under $25,000.”
