THE descendant of the original go-anywhere SUV family wagon – the all-wheel drive Subaru L-Series wagon that debuted in 1972 – is on a fightback to reclaim its crown.
Earlier in 2015 Subaru added an automatic for the diesel Forester variant which the company hoped would peg sales back from rivals who have been successfully marketing the pairing for some years.
The continuously variable transmission (CVT) is mated to the existing 2.0-litre diesel engine. Previously the diesel Forester, launched in 2010, was available only as a manual.
The combination directly slots into the wish-list of families, especially those in urban areas, and should auger well for country SUV buyers.
Compared with most of its rivals, there’s a hardcore edge to the Forester. It is perceived as being a quality all-road leisure wagon than just a shopping trolley.
It can actually go off the road and is surprisingly adept at overcoming poor road conditions to be more than just another SUV.
