RARE is the occasion when sedan is outsold by wagon, yet the Subaru Liberty is eclipsed beyond three-to-one in sales volume by the jacked-up wagon version of its sedan self, called the Outback.

Still, the Liberty stands in third place in the sub-$60K mid-size passenger-car class behind the Toyota Camry and Mazda6, and that is clearly enough for Subaru to pay it some attention and deliver MY16 updates beyond fresh lip gloss.

The flagship 3.6R as tested here, along with the more affordable 2.5i Premium, gain several new active safety features and all Liberty models receive a revised suspension tune aimed at reducing harshness and float.

However is it enough to get this Subaru back on the shopping lists of those beyond the traditional sedan buyer set?
