LIBERTY models across the four sedan/three wagon range are fitted with three-point, lap/sash seatbelts and head restraints for all occupants, dual front airbags, front seatbelt pretensioners with load limiters, ABS brakes and side intrusion bars. The Heritage sedan and wagon are also fitted with seat-mounted front side airbags, while the Heritage wagon is the sole recipient of Subaru's version of an electronic stability program called Vehicle Dynamics Control (VDC). The Liberty was crash tested by the Australian New Car Assessment Program (ANCAP) in November, 1999. It performed well in both offset front and side impact crash tests and was given a four-star rating overall, out of a maximum of five stars. The passenger compartment maintained its shape well during both tests and dual front airbags protected driver and front passenger from serious head injury. In the offset front test, protection from serious lower leg injury was marginal for the driver while in the side impact test protection from serious chest injury was also marginal.
