Subaru updates WRX range

All WRX versions now have larger 18-inch alloy wheels to match the size worn by the top-performing STI, while the interior has a larger 6.2-inch touchscreen centerpiece for accessing the various information and entertainment features.
Despite the extra kit, the entry-level six-speed manual price is unchanged at $38,990 before on-road costs, as is the version with Lineartronic continuously variable transmission (CVT) that still costs $40,990.
Higher-spec WRX Premium and the WRX STI performance flagship have been given more extras in the range update with a larger 7.0-inch touchscreen for accessing new applications such as Pandora with voice activation or pinch and zoom controls.
In addition to the information system upgrade, Premium and STI variants also get a significant boost to driver assistance tech with blind-spot monitoring, lane-change assistant and rear cross-traffic alert now standard.
New self-dipping headlights look after other road users at night, while the automatic dimming rear-view mirror shades the driver's eyes from other vehicle's headlights.
Power-folding mirrors with incorporated Side View Monitor completes the package of extra gear.
Both manual and automatic versions of the Premium WRX have increased by $900 to $44,890 and $46,890 respectively, while the most affordable STI is now more attainable to the tune of $500 with pricing from $49,490.
The flagship STI Premium has increased in price by $400 to $55,390, while the addition of the STI's iconic but purely aesthetic spoiler takes the price up by another $300.
Power and performance is unchanged with the update and the 2.0-litre turbo WRX produces 197kW and accelerates to 100km/h from standstill in 6.0 seconds, while the more potent STI does the dash in 4.9 seconds thanks to its 221kW 2.5-litre boxer engine.
Both versions send power to all four corners via the Subaru “always on” true four-wheel drive system. STI versions are only available with a six-speed manual gearbox.
Since its introduction last year, the WRX range has won a strong following in Australia with 1665 sold to the end of June this year.
In April this year, Subaru sold 691 WRXs, breaking the record of 469 that was set back in 1999 with the first-generation model. Out of the 691 total, 141 of those sold were the fiery STI.
