Power comes from a 2.0-litre, all-alloy, twin camshaft four-cylinder engine which generates 94kW at 6000rpm and 174Nm at 2900rpm

"Drive Select" 4x4 system allows changes between two and four-wheel drive at speeds up to 100km/h

A five-speed manual transmission is standard while an electronically-controlled four-speed automatic with normal and power modes is optional

The box-section ladder-frame chassis protects underbody components and is said to offer good rigidity and vibration damping

The three-door Grand Vitara's wheelbase is 280mm shorter than five-door model

The MacPherson strut front suspension features separated coil springs and low-pressure shock absorbers for a longer stroke

The rigid rear axle is located by five links with low-pressure gas dampers and coils springs, separated for long travel, providing greater traction

Air-conditioning, power-assisted rack and pinion steering, electric windows, central locking and electrically-adjustable mirrors are among the standard features

Stopping power comes from ventilated discs at the front and drums at the rear

Dual airbags are available as an option

Multi-reflector halogen headlights, roof rails and a rear window wiper/washer are standard equipment

Grand Vitara three-door is fitted with standard five-spoke, 16-inch alloy wheels

Rear seats have a split-fold backrest to increase load area

All the seats can be folded fully flat

A rust-resistant galvanising process and an underbody coating promote durability
