Grand Vitara goes turbo-diesel

Available from February 1, the Grand Vitara DDiS with a standard five-speed manual gearbox is priced at $34,990 – $4000 more than the V6 petrol model and $6000 more than the four-cylinder petrol.
The new 1.9-litre common rail direct-injection intercooled and turbocharged diesel engine produces 95 kW of power at 3750 rpm and 300 Nm of torque at 2000 rpm.
This compares with 103kW/183Nm for the 2.0-litre petrol four and 135kW/250Nm for the 2.7-litre petrol V6.
The turbocharger is a Garret, water-cooled version, with boost pressure regulated by variable fins to improve performance across the rev range.
Turbo cooling is provided by an electrical turbo cooling pump, which ensures circulation of engine coolant even after the engine has stopped.
Suzuki Australia general manager Tony Devers said that customers have been asking for a diesel version for some time.
“Grand Vitara remains one of the very few compact SUVs that offer a dual-range transmission, offering true off-road ability, as well as excellent approach and departure angles,” said Mr Devers.
“The Grand Vitara turbo-diesel will pack a full complement of safety equipment, including ESP with traction control, six airbags and ABS with electronic brakeforce distribution and brake assist.
“Inside, customers will be cosseted in a comfortable environment complete with cruise control, MP3 compatible CD player, climate control air-conditioning and power windows and mirrors.”
