SUZUKI VITARA 2D HARDTOP (1988-2000)
A MORE practical alternative as there is rear seating and greater luggage space. Shares mechanical features with the X90 so performance on and off-road is similar. The Vitara arguably looks better. A soft-top version is available, matching the X90's removable glass T-bar roof.

DAIHATSU TERIOS 4D WAGON (1997-2001)
SHRINK-wrapped 4WD with tight seating for four and little luggage space, the toy-like Terios manages to make the X90 look like a serious off-roader. The buzzy 1.3-litre, four-cylinder engine has to be revved hard to keep up while the gearchange is notchy.

TOYOTA RAV 4 3D HARDTOP (1994-2000)
THE best all-rounder, offering hot-hatch performance and car-like handling and roadholding thanks to economical and unburstable Camry engine, Celica underpinnings and full-time 4WD. Cabin is versatile, airy and comfortable. No ultra-low first gear or ladder-frame chassis means no off-roading.

HYUNDAI COUPE SX 2D COUPE (1996-1999)
THE style-conscious will love the sheer drama of the sporty Hyundai's striking design inside and out. Dynamically impressive with good handling, roadholding and ride. The Lantra-derived 1.8- litre, four-cylinder engine is grunty but gruff and the manual gearshift leaves a lot to be desired.
