PERHAPS this compact coupe-styled crossover was named by a disgruntled Toyota employee because a) C-HR sounds like something you do when unhappy at work and b) C-HR sounds like a Honda SUV nameplate.

The resignation letter theory certainly explains this break from Toyota naming convention, although the whole car feels like a departure for the Japanese brand – in a very good way.

Runaway sales success of the experimental-looking Nissan Juke has taken a long time to embolden Toyota enough for it to jump on the quirky pseudo-SUV bandwagon that is also occupied by the Renault Captur and Citroen Cactus, both of which have lent weight to the concept-made-reality crossover cause.

Toyota might be late to the party, but with the C-HR it has shown up with DJ decks, a troupe of podium dancers and a Kegerator.
