WHILE Ford’s development of the Everest has turned out a rival to the big-selling Toyota LandCruiser Prado, the shift from rugged separate-chassis off-roaders to more car-like monocoque SUVs has left a gap in the market for people wanting family wagons that can still do it in the dirt.
Nissan’s once-rugged Pathfinder has become a bitumen-basher and its place taken by the Isuzu MU-X, which shares much with Holden’s Colorado 7. Meanwhile, the Mitsubishi Challenger has returned with Pajero Sport badges.
But here comes Toyota with an all-new, HiLux-based wagon, a spiritual successor to the 4Runner and Surf for the 21st Century. And it’s good enough to steal sales from the pricier Prado.
