WHILE most 4x4s are now fitted with disc brakes on the front and rear, the HiLux has what most light commercials have - discs on the front and drums at the rear. The hydraulic vacuum servo-assisted brakes use twin piston callipers pushing 289mm pads to control the front ventilated discs and a load-sensing proportioning valve mated with drum brakes to stop the rear. The load sensor helps distribute the braking force to the appropriate wheel and avoid brake lock-up. The HiLux stops well considering it has a kerb weight of 1761kg, but care must be taken to allow greater braking distance when the vehicle is loaded - remembering that a standard Falcon ute has the same size front disc pads yet weighs about 120kg less. Toyota fits a dealer optional, Aisin three-channel, four-sensor Anti Skid Braking (ABS) system.
