MUCH about the Australian automotive psyche is revealed by the fact that for what feels like years, those in the motoring media have been badgered by family, friends and strangers at parties about when the new HiLux is coming.

It has been a question raised more often than the cliched enquiry as to the best (or worst) car we have driven. With some truth in our jest, we’d tell them it was the HiLux.

Despite the arrival of impressive beasts like the Aussie-designed and developed Ford Ranger or the knockout debutante Volkswagen Amarok, Toyota’s outclassed, outmoded and overpriced truck retained sales dominance.
