THE 78 Series LandCruiser is a heavy duty vehicle and requires a heavy duty tyre and rim, so Toyota fits 7.50 R16 8PR LT radials to 5.5Fx16 steel split rims with the exception of the RV model, which is fitted with 265/70 R16 LT tyres on 7.00JJx16 alloy rims. The test vehicle tyre was Dunlop SP Road Gripper (tyre brand depends on Toyota's supply arrangements at time of build), and provided good grip on dry bitumen but limited grip on wet bitumen - especially when the vehicle tray was empty. The tyre's high sidewall reduces some of the suspension harshness by absorbing road bumps but is stiff enough to prevent excessive roll when cornering. The eight-ply radial tread produces a moderate amount of road noise or growl but nothing like a dedicated off-road tyre can, yet off-road grip is still very good as the tread pattern is open and relatively self clearing with aggressive side lugs.
