THE Prado's four-cylinder, 3.0-litre turbo-diesel engine uses plenty of modern technology - such as a drive by wire electronic throttle - but it is not the most highly developed t-d on the 4WD market. It uses twin balance shafts for smoothness and an intercooler to maximise intake charge efficiency, but has a single overhead camshaft with just two valves per cylinder where some of its competition is using twin camshafts and multi valves. The compact, lightweight turbocharger is water-cooled for efficiency and durability, while the air-to-air intercooler lowers the temperature of intake gases for more efficient combustion. Because of the high diesel compression ratio, each engine has its own individually tailored head gasket designed to eliminate the risk of pistons protruding above the cylinder block deck. The t-d Prado produces 96kW at 3600rpm, with 343Nm of torque at 2000rpm.
