Massive Toyota electric window switch recall

TOYOTA is recalling 297,931 Aurion, Camry, Corolla, Kluger and Yaris models in Australia over the potential sticky operation of the electric window master switch located on the driver’s armrest.

The Japanese giant says the recall is a precautionary measure due to the “non-uniform application of lubricating grease resulting in wear to the internal sliding contact points”.

In some cases the switch may become inoperative but in the worst case scenario, if owners have tried to rectify the problem using incorrect lubricants, the switch assembly “may overheat and melt”.

The recall is part of a global campaign involving 7.4 million vehicles, of which there have been six reported cases in this country.

Toyota says no accidents or injuries have been reported and expects only a small number of vehicles will require the circuit board containing the switches to be replaced.

For most cars the recall procedure will involve the switch being checked mechanically and electrically for correct operation and special electrical grease will be applied to make sure it works smoothly.

Toyota recommends owners experiencing the problem should stop using it until their cars have been inspected and, if necessary, repaired.

The company will start writing to owners of affected vehicles from mid-November asking them to make an appointment with their Toyota dealer, and are invited to call 1800 987 366 if they have any questions.

This year Toyota Australia has recalled the Camry and Aurion over a potential fuel leak, the RAV4 SUV twice over separate potential issues with instrument panel reinforcement and loose suspension, and the HiAce van over possible exhaust gas and fuel leaks.
