A Bug's life

VOLKSWAGEN wants to put the new Beetle back in the movies to coincide with the vehicle's launch in Australia next month.

Budding film-makers are being enticed with cash and other prizes to create mini-movies.

Obviously inspired by "Herbie: The Love Bug" - a classic 1960s movie starring the original Beetle - local VW agent Inchcape Distributors Australia has launched the short film competition, "The Bug Picture".

But you had better get busy if you want to enter because the cut- off date is January 10, 2000 - just before the car is launched in Australia.

Entries are to be three to seven minutes in length, on film, digital tape or BetaCam SP, but entries should be submitted with a VHS copy and return postage.

The winner will get the use of a New Beetle for a year, $5000 cash and a New Beetle Pack, which includes a remote controlled car (a Beetle, of course) and special Beetle clothing and accessories.

Second prize is $3500 and a New Beetle Pack while third prize is $1500 and the prize pack.

The competition is not restricted to amateurs. Anyone from students to professional film-makers is invited to enter.

There is no limit to the film-maker's imagination apart from a requirement to include a VW Beetle - however briefly - in either a cameo or feature role.

"To celebrate the enduring relationship with the Beetle since its arrival in 1948, we are offering short film-makers the chance to portray this motoring icon in a creative and unusual way," said the marketing manager of VW Australia, Mr Oliver Mann.

"And, with many thousands of original Beetles still on Australian roads, contestants should not have any problem finding a Beetle to feature in their films." The winners will be announced at the official launch of the New Beetle.

Entries should be sent to: The Bug Picture, c/o Volkswagen Marketing, Private Bag 59, Wetherill Park NSW DC1851.
