Sydney show: VW plays Golf in Adidas

BY MARTON PETTENDY | 28th Sep 2010

IT WAS unveiled alongside a piping-hot ‘Excessive’ variant at Austria’s wacky Wothersee Tour in May and now Volkswagen Australia has announced it will launch the Adidas-badged Golf GTI special-edition locally at next month’s Sydney motor show.

While there is no sign yet of the Excessive model for Australia, the new-look Golf GTI Adidas five-door is now available to order with a six-speed DSG transmission as standard for $45,490, positioning it mid-way between the five-door Golf GTI manual ($40,490) and the flagship Golf R 4Motion five-door manual ($49,990).

Following in the mould of the special-edition Golf GTI Pirelli, the Adidas GTI will be available in unspecified numbers and is differentiated primarily by unique 18-inch ‘Serron’ alloy wheels that feature five machine-polished U-shaped dual spokes, with high-sheen black paint in between.

Standard bi-Xenon headlights with dynamic cornering lights, dark tinted tail-light clusters with LED technology and Adidas badges on the B-pillars also set the special Golf apart.

Inside, the GTI’s black and red sports seats were customised in the joint-venture with Adidas and now feature inner fabric panels bearing a GTI-Adidas design with matching logos, lateral bolsters trimmed in Vienna leather and double-cap seams of the head restraints in ‘Flash Red’ – both for the heated and height-adjustable front seats and the rear seats split by a combined centre armrest and ski-port.

Contrasting-colour front door inserts, aluminium interior accents, fabric floor mats with decorative borders and a gearshift grip in the golf ball design of the first-generation GTI round out the cosmetic changes for the Adidas GTI, which will be available only in the GTI-specific exterior paint colours of ‘Candy White’ and ‘Tornado Red’.

Naturally, standard GTI features continue in the Adidas, including the 157kW turbocharged 2.0-litre four-cylinder petrol engine with dual-outlet exhaust, an electronic transverse differential lock and GTI-specific ESP stability control tuning, plus an RCD 510 sound system and a Media Device Interface with Bluetooth phone connectivity.
