WHILE it might not quite live up to the name when it comes to traversing all tracks, the Bush Tucker version of the Volkswagen Passat wagon doesn't shirk a detour off the bitumen.

Equipment upgrades in line with the road-going family wagon, as well as some model-specific additions to help it when traction, have added a quietly effective string to the Passat's bow.

It is priced $7900 more than the mechanically related Skoda Octavia Scout 135TDI diesel 4x4 and $1300 more than the most expensive (petrol) Subaru Outback, which beats the German for clearance, but the Alltrack packs more cargo space, higher outputs and a lower thirst.
