THE Passat's 2.8-litre V6 is familiar across the VW-Audi range and tends to prefer a serve of rpm before it begins to deliver its best. It uses a cast-iron block with alloy cylinder heads and picks up the five-valve layout now commonly adopted by Audi, driving them with two camshafts per cylinder bank. The long-stroke design helps torque, although under 2500rpm the engine is not yet ready to demonstrate its true mettle. The engine uses electronic multi-point fuel injection, but requires the use of premium unleaded fuel. Fuel consumption of 10 litres per 100km is easily achievable on the open road. The V6 produces 142kW at 6000rpm with 280Nm of torque at 3200rpm. VW claims a zero to 100km/h acceleration time of around 9.5 seconds.
