VOLKSWAGEN used last week’s International Vienna Engine Symposium to unveil its latest engine and transmission developments – a new 90kW TSI petrol engine and the world’s first seven-speed dual-clutch gearbox (DSG) for the compact and small-medium segments.
The new 1.4-litre direct-injection turbo engine produces 200Nm at 1500rpm – 30 per cent more torque than the current 1.6 FSI engine. It is also claimed to be six per cent more economical than the current 1.6 FSI.
Meanwhile, the seven-speed DSG gearbox will be available in vehicles from the Polo to Passat and can transfer torque equivalent to a maximum 250Nm.
Combined, the two products – both of which are scheduled for release in Europe later this year – are claimed to return excellent fuel consumption.
For example, the Golf small car averages 5.9L/100km.
