Seven speeds for DSG

VOLKSWAGEN has issued full details of the redesigned version of its highly acclaimed DSG "double-clutch" transmission.

Featuring seven gears and twin dry clutches with organic bonded friction linings that do not require cooling or lubrication, the all-new automated manual gearbox will enter production later this year.

It will eventually replace the current six-speed DSG transmission, which has comprised a pair of wet clutches since 2003. Codenamed DQ200, it’s claimed to offer both increased performance (via a lower first gear ratio) and efficiency (via a taller seventh gear ratio).

Mounted transversely for the first time, measuring just 369mm long and weighing only 79kg including the dual-mass flywheel, the compact new DSG is applicable to every VW model from Polo to Passat and at present can handle up to 125kW and 250Nm of torque.

Volkswagen used the International Vienna Engine Symposium earlier this month to unveil the world’s first seven-speed dual-clutch gearbox, as well as a new 90kW TSI petrol engine.
