Zeekr 7X headed to Australia

BY MATT CAMPBELL | 19th Aug 2024

ZEEKR Australia may not have made a single vehicle sale yet, but the brand has already announced what could be the most important addition to its model range, the Zeekr 7X midsize SUV, which is due to arrive in 2025.

That model is set to compete in the very popular medium SUV space, but don’t expect it to be a $55K Tesla Model Y rival. The brand has hinted that it may be aiming for something more like the BMW iX3 and Skoda Enyaq when the new model launches here next year.

GoAuto understands that a starting price around or below $80,000 is the target for the 7X, which is similar in size to the aforementioned European EVs and the related Polestar 3.

Zeekr Australia and New Zealand managing director Connal Yan described the new SUV model as an “absolutely insane product” with “top-notch quality”.

“We are determined to bring this model to Australia, with right-hand drive production to begin in 2025,” he said.

It is a mid-to-large SUV in terms of physical dimensions, measuring 4825mm long on a 2925mm wheelbase, 1930mm wide and 1656mm tall. It shares its Geely Group Scaleable Electric Architecture (SEA) platform with the 007 sedan and the Geely Galaxy E8 electric saloon.

That means an 800-volt electric architecture and the potential to recharge with up to 500km of EV range in as little as 15 minutes.

Buyers can expect the SUV model to mirror the outputs of the electric 007 sedan, suggesting there will be a rear-wheel drive model with 310kW and an all-wheel drive version with a twin-motor layout offering 475kW.

Zeekr Australia has confirmed the smaller X model – which shares plenty with the Volvo EX30 – is going to hit the market in the coming months, priced from “less than $60,000 plus on-road costs” for the RWD version, and “under $70,000” for the AWD version.

After the X is the 009 luxury electric people-mover, which shares a lot with the Volvo EM90 MPV.

The Zeekr 009 pricing and specifications are yet to be revealed, but it is likely to be priced north of $100,000 plus on-road costs and will compete with the incoming Volkswagen ID Buzz people-mover, the just launched Mercedes eVito Tourer and EQV models, and the existing LDV Mifa 9, which was the first electric passenger van sold in Australia.

The brand will not be offering the car through an online sales mechanism and will not undertake an agency structure in the Australian market. Instead, there are dealer franchises in the works, with nine outlets to be open before the end of 2024.
