Chrysler Group is using platform sharing to dramatically increase its model offering across its three brands including Chrsyler, Jeep and Dodge.

The Nitro is based on the same platform as the next-generation Jeep Cherokee.

It is a monocoque base, but has ladder-frame bars welded on for extra rigidity.

It uses a solid-rear axle and a centre-locking differential four-wheel-drive system that is only suitable for gravel or snow driving.

The Nitro aims to offer a boldly designed alternative to vehicles such as the Toyota Kluger, Holden Captiva and Ford Territory.

It is available with either and petrol or diesel engine. The 3.7-litre V6 petrol unit, as seen in the Cherokee, produces 151kW at 5200rpm and 314Nm of torque at 4000rpm. It is teamed with a four-speed automatic transmission.

The 2.8-litre four-cylinder direct-injection diesel generates 130kW at 3800rpm and a stump-pulling 460Nm at 2000rpm, and uses a five-speed automatic.
