Slower-than-expected VQ sales prompted Holden to put more differences between the external appearance of the Commodore and Statesman.

So although they shared most components, the “VR LWB” (long-wheel base) range had their own bonnet, boot lid, taillights, and dashboard.

Anti-lock brakes, a driver’s side airbag, alloy wheels, and cruise control were standard. And better CD audio, electric front seats, two-tone paint and different suspension components were exclusively Caprice items.

Dynamics and refinement were again improved thanks to the wider track and front suspension and steering modifications.

The 130kW 3.8L V6 engine became available on the Caprice, while an HSV-enhanced 185kW 5.0L V8 was an extra-cost option to the standard 165kW 5.0L V8.
