Porsche says happy birthday with new Boxster 25 Years
PORSCHE Cars Australia (PCA) has celebrated the 25th birthday of its Boxster nameplate in style, today revealing the new limited-edition Boxster 25 Years.
Due to land in Australian showrooms from April, the 25 Years starts life as a 718 GTS 4.0 and will carry a starting price of $183,900 plus on-road costs, placing it a cool $9100 upstream of the regular GTS 4.0 (from $174,800).
The extra outlay over its donor car will net owners unarguable exclusivity given just 1250 units are being released worldwide, with unique two-tone paint – GT Silver Metallic/Neodyme, Deep Black Metallic/Neodyme and Carrara White Metallic/Neodyme – unique 20-inch alloy wheels, Porsche Exclusive Design fuel filler cap, Bordeaux leather interior, aluminium interior package, 14-way power adjustable sports seats, ‘Boxster 25’ lettered door sills, embossed ‘Boxster 25’ roof lettering and a multifunction GT sports leather steering wheel.
As is usually the way with PCA, Australian cars will be delivered with a few extra goodies included as standard, such as automatic dimming mirrors and rain sensor, heated seats, lane change assist, cruise control, front and rear ParkAssist, Porsche Entry and Drive, interior surveillance, dual-zone climate control, Light Design Package, Apple CarPlay and digital radio.
Power in the 25 Years comes courtesy of the same 4.0-litre flat six-cylinder as found in its donor car, meaning the headline figures remain steady at 294kW/420Nm, all of which is sent to the rear wheels via either a six-speed manual transmission or seven-speed dual-clutch (PDK) automatic – a $5990 option.
With the latter fitted, 0-100km/h is dealt with in 4.0 seconds while the top speed is pegged at 293km/h.
In classic PCA style, straight-line performance only tells part of the story however with cornering also playing a big part in the sportscar experience.
To make sure the 25 Years is as agile yet comfortable as possible, it will come as standard with adaptive sports suspension, torque vectoring and a mechanical limited-slip differential.
The Boxster 25 is far from the first celebratory or heritage-themed model currently being rolled out by PCA, in fact it is the third to be announced or teased within the past six months or so.
In June last year the brand revealed the 911 Targa 4S Heritage Design Edition which pays homage to the classic Porsche sportscars and racecars of the 50s, 60s, 70s and 80s through a unique livery design and reworked interior.
Following that reveal came the announcement in December that PCA would be launching a new model exclusive to Australia designed the celebrate the 70th anniversary of the brand’s arrival Down Under.
At this stage that car is still shrouded in mystery with the only details revealed thus far being that all 25 units will be finished in ‘Fish Silver Grey Metallic’ paint as a nod to the original fish silver grey 356 Cabriolet – the first Porsche to be offered locally – and that it would launch sometime this year.
PCA was one of the more fortunate brands in 2020, recording a 2.0 per cent sales increase year-on-year despite the crippling and ongoing COVID-19 pandemic.
Last year the premium German brand notched up 4243 sales, the bulk of which were made up by the Macan SUV (2158), as opposed to the 4161 recorded in 2019.
