Mazda 2 update priced from $22,990

MAZDA has priced its freshly updated 2 hatch and sedan range for Australia this week, the 1.5-litre petrol-powered line-up now available to order from $22,990 plus on-road costs.

Hatch models are now available in four grades – Pure, Pure SP, Evolve and GT – while the sedan line-up is trimmed to two – Pure and GT – both with an automatic transmission as standard.

The changes equate to an uptick in price of between $680 and $1080 depending on variant and body style.

Mazda Australia says the renewed Mazda2 “has undergone an extensive refresh that redefines style in the segment”, a segment it now shares with the likes of the Kia Rio (from $19,690 +ORCs), MG 3 (rom $18,990 +ORCs), Suzuki Swift (from $20,490 +ORCs) and Toyota Yaris (from $24,640 +ORCs).

The update is characterised by a new frontal treatment incorporating remoulded bumpers, additional paint colours and refreshed interior garnishing. The minor facelift will give new life to the ageing model which joined Mazda’s ranks in 2014.

Further changes to the ‘2’ see new black or body-coloured grille designs, a restyled front bumper and asymmetrically placed colour accents on the front grille and rear bumper that Mazda says “enhances the car’s youthful spirit”.

Hatch variants, as well as the flagship GT sedan, also adopt a redesigned rear bumper.

New paint colours, including Aero Grey Metallic and Airstream Blue Metallic, join the nine-colour palette, while the lower grade Pure and Pure SP benefit from a range of additional features inspired by Mazda’s Kodo design language.

The offerings extend to three coloured dashboard garnished finished in Pure White, Mirror Black or Mint, which are determined by the car’s exterior paint scheme. Additionally, the Pure SP, Evolve and GT are available with a wrapped black roof.

Inside, Evolve and GT variants are now differentiated by a black interior décor contrasted with red highlights on the seat stitching and air vent surrounds. GT variants add partial leather seats, a black and red dashboard, and, externally, an aero-inspired alloy wheel design and polished exhaust tips.

Barring the Pure, all grades now also feature a shark fin-style antenna.

“(The) Mazda2 has always been a fan favourite for our newest road users and buyers who enjoy a premium product that also adeptly delivers on safety, quality, economy and drivability,” said Mazda Australia managing director Vinesh Bhindi.

The Mazda2 ranks second within the Light passenger car under $30K segment as of the end of February. Mazda sold 1164 examples of the 2, placing it well behind the first-place MG 3 with 2970 unit sales.

Year-to-date, Kia sits in third place within the segment, the Rio selling 988 units. Fourth place goes to the Suzuki Swift (816 units) and fifth place the Toyota Yaris (347 units).

The updated Mazda2 will go on sale in June 2023, with deliveries beginning in July 2023.
