Updated BMW 2 Series, M2 on the way

BMW has announced updates to its 2 Series range for 2025, sticking with a two-core-model strategy, plus performance M-car option, due Down Under in Q4 this year.

 

Ahead of the mid-life update BMW Australia has confirmed that to the end of May this year a total of 702 2 Series models have been registered, representing an 88 per cent increase on the same period in 2023.

 

Sitting at the top of the 2 Series range, the M2 also tops BMW’s M car sales ladder, ahead of larger, more powerful M3 and M4 models.

 

The updated lineup will consist of the same 230i, M240i xDrive and M2, with the M-fettled option the only model to receive powertrain upgrades.

 

The 230i will be powered by the same four-cylinder turbocharged engine producing 190kW/400Nm and its M240i xDrive big brother will use the same six-cylinder turbocharged unit producing 285kW/500Nm.

 

Power rises from 338kW to 353kW for the M2, and in the automatic model; and yes, a manual ‘box remains for 2025. Torque is boosted from 550Nm to 600Nm.

 

This equates to a 4.2-second 0-100km/h sprint in the manual model and the auto does it in four seconds flat, a 0.1 second improvement for both models.

 

BMW says the 0-200km/h sprint – a redundant metric on Australian roads, sadly – is 0.6 seconds quicker in both models with the auto doing it in 12.9 and the manual in 13.7 seconds.

 

Exterior changes are limited to fresh colour options, revised 19-inch alloy wheels (20-inch rears are fitted to the M2) and a colour-coded M Sport package which is standard across 2 Series Coupe models.

 

The colour-coding includes the lower section of the rear apron and side skirts, items that were previously blacked-out, but the diffuser remains gloss black in finish. Some additional gloss black accents will also be added to the M240i x Drive, like mirror cabs and an M badge in the lower air intake.

 

The infotainment offering across models receives an update to BMW’s Operating System 8.5, bringing quick select functionality allowing quicker adjustment of air conditioning, seat and steering wheel heating.

 

New upholstery choices are offered, with Sensatec upholstery sports seats now standard on the base 230i and M Sport leather seats standard for the M240i x Drive. A new M leather flat-bottom steering wheel is included across the range, with a red centre marking.

 

M2 buyers also get the choice of an Alcantara-trimmed wheel upgrade.

 

The M2 retains the same M carbon fibre interior finish, with the trim option also available for standard 2 Series coupes.

 

Current models start at $74,300 before on-road costs for the 230i and top out at $121,700 for the M2, but BMW will not share pricing for the updated range until next month.
