Mazda previews CX-70 in Canberra

MAZDA Australia has this week previewed its forthcoming CX-70 SUV at the National Gallery in Canberra – marking the first time all four Large Product Group SUVs have premiered together in the world.

Joining the CX-60 launched in 2022 and the flagship CX-90 introduced last year, the CX-70 and CX-80 are set to join Mazda’s Australian portfolio at the end of 2024.

Mazda Australia will therefore become the first and only market globally to offer the CX-60, CX-70, CX-80 and CX-90 concurrently.

While full details on engine specifications, launch timings, pricing and equipment for the CX-70 are yet to be confirmed, GoAuto understands the five-seat version of the CX-90 will offer similar six-cylinder diesel and petrol 48-volt mild hybrid drivelines displacing 3.3 litres.

Output figures have yet to be announced but are expected to mimic those of the CX-90 with 187kW and 550Nm from the diesel and 254kW and 500Nm from the petrol. Both run an eight-speed automatic transmission as standard and are offered with a rear-biased all-wheel drive arrangement.

The CX-70 is visually similar to the seven-seat CX-90, differentiated only by model-specific bumper covers, blackened exterior garnishing, and bespoke alloy wheel designs.

Inside, the CX-70 is likewise a facsimile of the CX-90 with décor, technology and accommodation levels appearing identical across the two-row cabin.

Mazda has used familiar dual 12.3-inch screens for instrumentation and infotainment, identical HVAC controls (with tri-zone climate control included), and niceties including electrically adjustable heated and ventilated front seats, a heated steering wheel, wireless device charging pad, surround view camera technology and more.

On the safety front, and again as per the CX-90, it is expected the CX-70 will offer technologies including a blind-spot monitoring system with vehicle exit warning, driver monitor, front and rear parking sensors, LED headlights with dusk-sensing function and auto high beam, and smart brake support with turn-across traffic function.
