More powerful, cheaper BMW M5 priced

BMW Australia has priced its G90-series M5 this week, following the model’s public debut at the Goodwood Festival of Speed.

Available from $259,900 plus on-road costs, the 2025 BMW M5 is substantially cheaper (-$13,700) and more powerful (+75kW/250Nm) than the model it replaces, as well as being physically larger and with plug-in hybrid driveline technology.

Under the bonnet we find BMW’s carryover 4.4-litre twin-turbocharged V8 petrol engine (430kW/750Nm) joined by an electric motor (145kW/280Nm) for total system output of 535kW/1000Nm (!).

Power is delivered to all four wheels via BMW’s xDrive active all-wheel drive system and a ZF-sourced eight-speed automatic transmission.

However, because of its larger proportions and additional weight (now close to 2500kg), the new M5 is slower than its predecessor, making the 0-100km/h sprint in 3.5 seconds, down 0.2 seconds. Top speed is electronically limited to 305km/h.

The plug-in hybrid technology featured in the new M5 comprises an 18.6kWh battery pack BMW says enables all-electric travel for up to 69km (WLTP) at speeds up to 140km/h.

Locally, the M5 will be offered as standard with 20-inch front and 21-inch rear alloy wheels, an active rear differential, adaptive dampers and quad exhaust outlets.

Other equipment highlights include adaptive LED headlights, BMW Iconic Glow and IconicSound Electric packages, keyless entry and ignition, M Compound brakes, heated seats and steering wheel, interior garnishing in Dark Silver M accent and carbon-fibre, M Carbon exterior package, M seatbelts, Merino leather upholstery, quad-zone climate control and seating ventilation (front).

Tech highlights include BMW ConnectedDrive, BMW Live Cockpit Professional, DAB+ digital radio reception, Driving Assistant Professional, Parking Assistant Professional, wireless device charging pad, and an 18-speaker Bowers & Wilkins surround sound system.

All metallic paint hues are offered as a no-cost option, while BMW Individual hues are available for $4100 (Storm Bay) and $7100 Frozen Deep Grey.

M Carbon Ceramic brakes are an $18,500 option.

Production of the 2025 BMW M5 is underway with Australian dealership arrivals to commence in the fourth quarter of this year.
