CHRYSLER gave us a virtually all-new Grand Cherokee in 1999. It may have looked surprisingly like the outgoing model but, according to Jeep, there are no significant carry-over parts. What it does have, at the top end of the family tree, is a muscular 4.7-litre V8 and a very clever four-wheel drive system that looks close to impossible to stop. But like most big 4WDs, it is thirsty and generally uncommunicative, in terms of driver feel, on the road.

Family Tree: Grand CherokeeThe first Grand Cherokee came in March 1996, which was later replaced in July 1999 by a new model that includes a strong 4.7-litre V8 in its armament. The first Grand Cherokee used a 130kW 4.0-litre 6-cylinder that is still powering the current Grand Cherokee Laredo.
