Cadillac Opulent Velocity a future design pointer

Opulent Velocity electric vehicle at the centre of Cadillac’s autonomous ambitions

19 Aug 2024

CADILLAC’S commitment to fully electric (and autonomous) vehicles gathers momentum with the appearance of the Opulent Velocity Concept, a design study that points the direction the iconic US manufacturer says it is headed.

“The future of all-electric luxury performance,” the vehicle is a long, 2+2 coupe with scissor (butterfly) doors that has two distinct driver experiences – Opulent and Velocity (OV) the design study combining advanced technology with bespoke luxury the company says is epitomised in its top shelf electric V-Series models.

Coupled with its electric-only powertrain delivering “hypercar” performance, the OV will also feature highly developed self-driving technology to create two dynamic extremes.

“Opulent Velocity is an experience-based design study,” said Global Cadillac Design executive director Bryan Nesbitt.

“It’s the future vision of luxury performance, incorporating Cadillac’s leadership in hands-free driving capabilities, electrification and performance excellence.

“Opulent Velocity expresses the most artful integration of technology, luxury and exhilaration characterised by Cadillac’s halo V-Series variants, and future electrification design expressions.”

With Level 4 autonomous capability the OV is designed to give a hands-free immersive experience through multi-sensory modes that promote respite accessible via a full widescreen display and Augmented Reality Head-Up Display (AR HUD).

Cadillac scientifically explored sound and light waves leveraging the findings throughout the cabin that incorporates curated art, entertainment and ambient light to immerse travellers in a sophisticated individualised hands-free environment.

When triggered by a touch of the multi-functional controller, the OV morphs from autonomous (Opulent) mode to Velocity experience mode that activates a more focused drive feel with the steering wheel and pedals “presenting” to the user who is prompted to take hold of the wheel.

Cadillac says the velocity experience “provides the user with the maximum thrill of a hyper car vehicle, while keeping the sense of luxury that has become synonymous with Cadillac V-Series”.

The concept’s front seats encompass cantilevered Y-shaped console and are linked directly to the door, helping secure the driver for high-speed driving.

The velocity experience is inspired by Cadillac’s Blackwing track-proven engineering incorporating an authentic track experience, the velocity mode conceptualises a “Ghost Car” function that displays on the HUD screen serving as the vehicle user guide.

Cadillac says this mode presents a competitive driving course that allows drivers to improve their lap times or compete against peers on various designated tracks.

The mode further visualises the capability to dictate driving enhancements including road overlays, active information about road conditions and complete control overactive aero and suspension damping settings.

Aesthetically, the OV reflects Cadillac’s V-Series R hybrid race cars, with a dramatic draped surface and clean modern appearance in a low silhouette and tucked front fascia.

“The front and rear entry and egress opening is enabled through distinct large butterfly doors with expansive door openings. In the same vein, the exterior’s subtle transitions and controlled surfaces celebrate its bold graphics and proportions,” said Cadillac in a statement.

The model features Cadillac’s vertical lighting signature that explores crystal fluted detailing that is seen on the tail lights, head lights and through into the 3D lit grille highlighted by an evolution of Cadillac’s illuminated badge.

“Opulent Velocity is inspired by the dynamic design cues of motorsports in a 2+2 aerodynamic body form,” said Cadillac Advanced Design manager Magalie Debellis.

“It conceptualises a holistic consideration of all elements and senses, showcasing a perfect marriage of hypercar personality with luxury execution and revered opulence. It’s a signal to the world that Cadillac intends to lead in electrified luxury performance.”

The design study gives an insight into future Cadillac design with artful integration of next generation technology as seen on the 3D information-enabled widescreen display, a fully digital cockpit, racing-inspired Y-shape steering wheel, voice command user experiences, and an intuitive infotainment system.

Inside, the cabin is “meticulously crafted” with the latest developments in colours, materials, and finishes.
