Callum Skye electric off-roader unveiled

Former Jaguar designer Ian Callum pens exciting new all-electric Skye off-roader

27 Nov 2023

WARWICK-BASED automotive design and engineering consultancy Callum has unveiled its Skye electric off-roader, the high-performance model offering a claimed driving range of 274km and a 0-100km/h acceleration figure of less than four seconds.

Created for owners “seeking extraordinary on- and off-road adventures”, the Callum Skye is the company’s first vehicle to be “fully conceived, designed and engineered in-house” and one that will occupy “a distinctive space in the automotive landscape”.

Due for release in the UK during the second quarter of 2024, the compact model (measuring 4047mm long by 1900mm wide) is constructed over a spaceframe chassis with “trail-capable” suspension and “appropriate clearance” its manufacturer says makes its “exceedingly capable off-road”.

“At four metres long, the Callum Skye is dramatically proportioned with a concise exterior aesthetic driven by its capabilities,” explained Callum head of design Ian Callum.

“It has been designed to exceed expectations: minimal mass, maximum capability – exceptionally usable and an absolute joy to drive. The exterior features a striking accent loop, intersected by a strong horizontal structure, flanked by organic forms front and rear. It is pared down to a level of necessity and understatement.

“At the heart of its story is its performance, style and capability, and a design integral to the engineering elements. For example, the lower section of the doors have beautifully integrated glass, offering outstanding visibility in all conditions. I believe the Skye is truly authentic – unique in concept and presence in the market.”

A target dry weight of 1150kg and a 50:50 front-to-rear balance is said to add to the Skye’s nimble handling characteristics. The all-wheel drive model features a 42kWh lithium-ion battery that is said to offer ultra-fast charging, with top-up times of less than 10 minutes. Anticipated range is listed at 274km.

With a 2+2 seating configuration and fully enclosed cabin, the Skye required no specialist protective clothing to operate and promises “unfettled fun and enjoyment without mess or hassle”. Callum says that being all-electric, the Skye is also significantly quieter than ICE-powered equivalents.

“We set an uncompromisingly high bar with our functional targets for the Callum Skye, creating a compelling, unique, versatile and durable vehicle,” said Callum head of engineering, Adam Donfrancesco.

“Throughout the development journey, we have held steadfast to the principals of simplicity and integrity, ensuring the Callum Skye conquers the rigorous demands of a variety of off-road terrains, while still delivering the ride comfort and handling that transforms winding country roads into captivating experiences for both the driver and passengers.”

Mr Donfrancesco said the vehicle is currently undergoing “diligent engineering refinement and rigorous testing” in the UK and Europe ahead of the announcement of definitive specifications and variant information.

The Callum Skye is expected to go on sale in the UK and across Europe in the second quarter of 2024.
