Geely launches Geometry high-end EV brand

New Geometry premium EV brand launched by Geely, 10 models planned by 2025

12 Apr 2019

CHINESE automotive giant Geely Auto Group has launched its own high-end electric vehicle (EV) brand, dubbed Geometry, which will launch initially with one model, the A, offered in two levels of specification.

The new EV brand plans to launch 10 new models into the market by 2025 and will offer models in a range of segments including sedans, SUVs, crossovers and people-movers.

While the brand has not discussed its global expansion plans, an Australian arrival is possible given Volvo EV sub-brand Polestar will be landing Down Under next year. It also falls under the Geely ownership umbrella.

Spearheading the brand’s launch, the Geometry A is a sedan offered with a standard and long-range ternary lithium battery, with a choice of 51.9kWh or 61.9kWh capacities.

The standard-range configuration offers a claimed 410km of range on the NEDC combined cycle, while the long-range version increases that figure to 500km.

Geometry has focused on using efficient powertrain systems in the A, borrowing technology from Geely including its electronic control, drive, battery and temperature control systems to achieve smooth power delivery and efficient operation in any weather.

Outputs from the motor are pegged at 120kW/250Nm, with a zero-to-100km/h sprint time of 8.8 seconds.

When hooked up to a fast-charging outlet, the A can replenish its battery from 30 to 80 per cent in 30 minutes and is equipped with a system that allows it to power accessories such as laptops, lamps and even ovens.

Active safety features on the A include autonomous emergency braking with pedestrian detection, adaptive cruise control with stop and go capability, forward and rear collision warning, door open warning, lane-keep assist, blind-spot detection, lane change assist, parking assistant, a surround-view monitor and an HD camera that records while driving.

Other safety features include high-beam control, a Bosch-derived ESC system, and a battery system capable of withstanding rigorous crash testing, resulting in what Geometry believes to be five-star safety.

Design-wise, the A features a “minimalist” design with a non-existent upper grille befitting its EV status, LED headlights reminiscent of the Kia Cerato, alloy wheels, and wide, narrow LED tail-lights.

Inside, it scores a large tablet-style infotainment screen with rotary-style controls, a digital instrument cluster, a head-up display and a minimalist button lay-out.

Geely Auto Group president and CEO An Conghui said the launch of Geometry is part of Geely’s plans to become a worldwide top-10 automotive company.

“Geely is a strong force and active participant in the field of new energy,” he said.

“We are guided by technological innovation and are determined to become a global leader in new energy.

“Geometry is our answer to the future of the industry, a representation of our ideals, and a firm step into a ‘beautiful new world’.

“The launch of Geometry and its first product advances Geely’s strategic goal of becoming one of world top-10 automotive groups.”
