Polestar 6 to be built in limited numbers

Convertible model to being production in 2026, all markets to reserve build slot from August

17 Aug 2022

FAR from being a roadster drought, the impending tsunami of BEVs will include a number of convertible or (hard) drop top sports cars as opposed to soft top convertibles.

Swedish Volvo offshoot, Polestar is the latest to confirm-for-production a performance electric roadster, based on a concept car called the Polestar O2 and before that the Polestar Precept.

The production car commencement date is expected to be some time in 2026 with the car to be called Polestar 6 electric performance roadster. Interested customers in all active Polestar markets can reserve a build slot online from this month.

“With overwhelming consumer and press response, we took the decision to put this stunning roadster into production and I am so excited to make it a reality,” said Polestar CEO Thomas Ingenlath.

“Polestar 6 is a perfect combination of powerful electric performance and the thrill of fresh air with the top down.”

The concept vehicle was revealed in Los Angeles in March as the Polestar O2, and the production version will build on that car’s design, technology and sustainability ambitions, also laid out by the Polestar Precept that showcases the brand’s vision for future sports cars.

The hard-top convertible will be built on Polestar’s bespoke bonded aluminium platform.

Developed in-house, it will feature the high-performance, 800-volt electric architecture already confirmed for Polestar 5.

This includes output of up to 650kW (884hp) and 900Nm from a dual motor powertrain, a targeted 0-100km/h sprint time of 3.2 seconds and a top speed of 250km/h.

To celebrate the launch, 500 numbered units of a special ‘LA Concept’ version, the ‘Polestar 6 LA Concept edition’, are planned to be produced.

They will exclusively feature the striking ‘Sky’ blue exterior, light leather interior and 21-inch wheels of the original Polestar O2 concept.

The production confirmation headlines the brand’s attendance with the electric roadster concept at the Pebble Beach Concours d’Elegance and ‘The Quail, A Motorsports Gathering’ events during Monterey Car Week in California, 18-21 August 2022.

The Polestar O2 exterior was influenced by aerospace design, both aesthetically and aerodynamically. Rather than resort to outlandish wings or spoilers, Polestar O2 features integrated aero ducts in the wheel arches and rear lights that double as air blades.

Stiff, responsive, and incredibly light the unibody of Polestar O2 is made from different grades of anodised aluminium, bonded by adhesive and oven cured, with a highly favourable strength-to-weight ratio.

Apart from enhancing performance, the bonded aluminium allows for more design flexibility, catering to different wheelbases while maintaining the precision and detail-obsessed focus which is a Polestar hallmark.

The interior of the Polestar O2 takes all the advancements made with Precept and applies them to a roadster.

It features a contextualised infotainment system that adapts to the driver’s movements, woven flax composite panels, 3D knit upholstery and other sustainable material innovations.

Paired with carefully curated colour combinations, O2 elevates comfort to a new level.

Further technical details and specification confirmations will be released as the production car becomes reality, leading up to the expected launch in 2026.
