Future models - Rolls-Royce - Phantom - EWBFirst look: Rolls-Royce extends PhantomSuper-sized: The Phantom limousine adds 250mm to its wheelbase but only 75kg extra weight over the standard-wheelbase version. Rolls-Royce reels in interest at the Geneva motor show with its long-legged Phantom18 Mar 2005 By TERRY MARTIN ROLLS-ROYCE introduced at the Geneva its extended-wheelbase Phantom limousine, which has a not inconsiderable 250mm added to the wheelbase. Achieved using longer aluminium extrusions in the construction of the body (rather than a simple cut-and-weld add-on exercise), the extra length is realised behind the B-pillar and creates even more generous legroom for rear passengers than exists in the standard-wheelbase version. As a result, Rolls-Royce claims that no torsional rigidity is lost and hence dynamic performance and driving refinement of the standard-length car are maintained. Also 250mm longer, the rear-hinged ‘coach’ doors now open to 80 degrees for effortless ingress and egress. Although the aluminium roof and rear door panels are new, the LWB Phantom shares all of its other major chassis and drivetrain components with the standard car. Additional weight is 75kg.
