Detroit show: Hummer goes Wrangler hunting

High-rider: HX is a go-anywhere fun machine.

Young designers strut their stuff with modular HX Concept

14 Jan 2008

HUMMER clearly has the iconic Jeep Wrangler in its gun-sights with the HX, an eye-catching concept designed by three of GM’s youngest design graduates.

Revealed at the 2008 North American International Auto Show in Detroit overnight, the Hummer HX is described as “a reconfigurable off-roader” – having a pair of removable roof panels, plus removable rear glasshouse, doors and even fenders.

It is smaller than the Hummer H3 that was recently launched in Australia, sitting on a 2616mm wheelbase (225mm less than the H3) and having only four seats, but is powered by the same 3.6-litre V6 engine.

“Hummer appeals to young people globally and served as a perfect first assignment for our newest talent,” said GM design chief Ed Welburn.

“Today’s graduates from top design schools are ready to hit the ground running (and) the Hummer design challenge gave our newest designers an opportunity to sprint.”
