Stinger missile: The stylish Kia Stinger was revealed at the 2017 NAIAS.
01/03/17The North American International Auto Show has come and gone for another year, but was packed full of many noteworthy public debuts for both concept and production vehicles.
The rear-drive Kia Stinger was arguably the star of the event as it was a symbol of the Korean brand’s rejuvenation, offering award-winning design and a potential replacement for the Commodore in the hearts of Aussies. A 272kW range-topping GT variant will also hopes to allay any fears that the large performance sedan will die off.
Another car with huge local implications was the next-gen Toyota Camry – which will be imported from Japan after Altona manufacturing ceases – featuring sleek styling and the return of an optional V6 engine that will replace the outgoing Aurion.
Meanwhile, Audi took the wrap off its Q8 concept, a BMW X6 competitor, which joins the German brand’s e-tron family with its plug-in hybrid powertrain. The second-generation SQ5 also lobbed, but, in a surprise to most pundits, eschewed its former model’s diesel drivetrain for petrol-only power.
Mid-life refreshes were also all the rage with updated versions of the Mercedes-AMG GT, Lamborghini Aventador and Mercedes-Benz GLA revealed publicly for the first time.
Not to be outdone, concept vehicles shared the spotlight too, with the Volkswagen I.D. BUZZ and Nissan Vmotion 2.0 offering glimpses into how electrification and autonomous technologies will change the future of the motoring industry.
