Almost everything we expected made an appearance, and there were a few surprises as well.

Two new Maserati models, called Ghibli and Levante, due to appear next year, for example.

How about the quirky Audi 'Q2' Cross Coupe concept, or Hyundai's bold step into the world of hydrogen fuel cell technology with the production ix35 Fuel Cell? There were GT3 racing Bentleys, hot Renault and Volkswagen hatches, funky Opel city cars named Adam, a Porsche Panamera wagon concept, and gorgeous sportscar concepts from Jaguar (F-Type) and Lexus (LF-CC), among others.

The biennial 2012 Mondial de l'Automobile in Paris is arguably the biggest motor show in the world.

It is unclear at this stage what new models will appear, but expect the latest and greatest from the world's premier car-makers.

According to overseas reports, possible debuts include the seventh generation Volkswagen Golf - one of the world's biggest-selling cars - and the next Mazda6 medium-sized car, which will be heavily based on the Takeri concept from the 2011 Tokyo show.

Stay posted for the latest from GoAuto in the lead up to the show in September.
