A brace of quirky concepts for 2011 Tokyo show as a nation rebuilds

30 Nov 2011

Japan’s premier auto event is still on schedule to commence on November 30, despite the recent natural disasters that an already embattled economy has faced.

For the first time in over 25 years the show will be held in Tokyo’s inner-city centre rather than at its outskirts.

Arguably the stars of the show will be the Subaru BRZ/Toyota 86 sports coupe twins, which will finally make their respective public debuts.

A host of new models and kooky concepts from the big Japanese manufacturers are promised, including a brace of electric and plug-in hybrid concepts from Honda such as the Sports EV concept.

Mitsubishi will debut its long-awaited 'Global Small', confirming it will wear the venerable Mirage nameplate. The Diamond-badged brand will also display an almost production-ready version its PX-MiEV Outlander compact SUV replacement.

Suzuki will display a plug-in hybrid Swift, a five-door variant of the Swift Sport and the quirky Regina hatchback concept.

Subaru will display Advanced Hybrid Tourer Concept that gives a good idea of how the next-gen Liberty and Outback will appear when it reaches production, while Daihatsu will show several oddball concepts including the two-cylinder D-X roadster.

Mazda, meanwhile, will show the stunning Takeri concept, previewing clearly the next-generation Mazda6 mid-sizer.

Keep an eye on GoAuto for all the latest news on the show, which will be brought to you by our reporters both here and directly from Tokyo.
