More powerful Toyota Supra here for an extra $2590

Toyota finally lobs its more powerful Supra as promised, but at a cost

2 Dec 2020

THE much-anticipated power bump for the Toyota Supra has finally happened with the new 285kW versions rolling into showrooms as of this week.

Still powered by the BMW-sourced turbocharged 3.0-litre straight six-cylinder petrol engine, the MY21 Supra develops an extra 35kW over the MY20 versions with peak power now rated at a Z4 M40i-matching 285kW while torque remains steady at 500Nm.

The results largely speak for themselves with Toyota claiming to have shaved 0.2 seconds off the Supra’s 0-100km/h time, now stopping the clock in 4.1s.

The extra shove primarily comes courtesy of an engine remap which has also served to broaden the maximum torque band slightly from 1600-4500rpm to 1800-5000rpm.

Complementing the extra firepower is a new pair of strut braces under the bonnet which have been installed to help mitigate chassis flex during aggressive cornering.

No changes have been made to the Supra’s styling save for a new Supra logo on the front brake callipers of the upper-spec GTS variant.

Unsurprisingly for such a major update, prices have risen across the board with the both the GT and GTS variants going up $2590 to $87,126 and $97,126 plus on-road costs respectively.

Toyota Australia vice-president of sales and marketing Sean Hanley said the upgrades would ensure the Supra continued to deliver the pure sportscar performance at the heart of the GR brand.

“Toyota Gazoo Racing and our GR brand portfolio of cars is all about pushing the limits and where we can, we will deliver every ounce of performance potential,” he said.

“This upgrade for GR Supra will continue our quest to deliver ever-better cars, with more power and under-bonnet bracing that will further enhance the thrilling driving experience offered by this iconic car.”

No changes have been made to the standard equipment lists of either variant with dual-zone climate control, smart entry and start, leather-accented upholstery, power-adjustable sports seats and a 10-speaker multimedia system all still included on the GT.

The GTS steps things up with sports pedals, a head-up display, bigger 19-inch forged alloy wheels and a 12-speaker JBL surround sound audio system.

Toyota sold 149 Supras through the first 10 months of 2020, accounting for 5.5 per cent of the $80,000-plus sportscar segment – 32 units less than the related BMW Z4 convertible (181).
