Chrysler reveals 2001 Voyager

Reworked: Chrysler's fifth generation Voyager has been re-engineered from stem to stern.

Chrysler has unveiled an all-new Voyager packed with a host of innovative and practical features

11 Jan 2000

CHRYSLER yesterday took the wraps off its new fifth generation Voyager people-mover at the Detroit motor show.

Although not too dissimilar visually to the current model, the new Voyager is said to be reworked from bumper to bumper.

The most noticeable distinguishing elements are its large, angular headlights and gaping, open-mouthed grille. The wrap-around tail lamps now feature clear red lenses with bright housings that create a jewel-like appearance.

Voyager's profile has elements of New Edge styling with the current model's rounded contours making way for sharper edges with a prominent crease extending from nose to tail.

The revised people-mover features an industry first electrically operated tailgate. Loading and unloading is therefore simplified with the tailgate able to be opened or closed by pressing a button on the key fob or inside the vehicle.

The side doors are also power operated and an obstacle detection system ensures limbs or other bodily parts are not trapped when opening or closing the doors.

Another practical feature is a lockable storage compartment between the front seats that can be removed completely or relocated to the space between the second row seats.

Options include a three-zone climate control system and a multi- position rear cargo organiser that can accommodate up to six grocery bags.

Although the third row bench seat does not flip and store as in some of the Voyager's rivals, it does have a 50/50 split/fold facility.

The 3.3-litre engine increases power output by 15 per cent - from 116kW to 133kW. Torque has increased 2.5 per cent, from 278Nm to 285Nm.

Safety and refinement levels are expected to benefit from a 20 per cent increase in body structure torsional stiffness. Steering and suspension components have also been revised to provide sharper responses and tauter handling.

The new Voyager's second and third row seats include user-ready child seat top and lower anchors that provide direct attachment to the compatible after-market child seats.

The brake rotors have greater mass and new callipers are stiffer and nearly 20 per cent larger to provide enhanced braking performance, durability and improved pedal feel.
