Isuzu updates Ready-to-Work range

Factory-backed N Series light truck fitouts aim to lure tradespeople away from utes

7 Apr 2026

ISUZU Australia Limited (IAL) has rolled out an expanded Ready-to-Work (RTW) range of pre-bodied light trucks, built on the brand’s latest N Series platform, offering Australian trade and service businesses a purpose-built alternative to the ubiquitous dual-cab ute.

The RTW concept is not new for Isuzu, which rolled out its first Tradepack body option in 2003, but the latest iteration of the program is Isuzu's most comprehensive yet, spanning trays, service bodies, pantechs and tippers.

Sitting underneath the RTW bodies is the overhauled N Series platform that debuted late last year, built on Isuzu’s modular I-MACS architecture with Euro 6 compliant engines, a new nine-speed dual-clutch transmission and a full suite of active driver assistance and safety tech.

Powertrain options across the range include a 3.0-litre turbo-diesel producing 110kW/375Nm, as well as a larger 5.2-litre turbo-diesel producing 140kW/513Nm for higher-GVM variants.

A new nine-speed dual-clutch automatic is available on selected variants, while the brand’s longstanding six-speed automated manual transmission and manual gearbox options also feature across the range

Isuzu’s off-the-shelf RTW options present a drive-in, drive-out proposition compared to the traditional route of purchasing a cab-chassis ute or truck, only to take it to an aftermarket body builder for fitout.

Crucially, many of the RTW models sit at 4500kg GVM, meaning they can be driven on a standard car licence while still offering a payload of more than 2000kg and towing capacity of 4000kg.

Only Ford’s Ranger Super Duty gets close to these numbers, and Isuzu knows it because the brand is actively chasing a slice of the ute market which last year accounted for 21 per cent of all new vehicles sales (or 235,000 units).

The pitch from Isuzu is that compared with a ute, light trucks can carry and tow more, distribute weight better and, with the new N Series platform, now bridge the comfort and technology gap that once separated the two.

Australian Bureau of Statistics (ABS) data backs the manufacturer’s claims, with rigid trucks averaging 94.6 thousand tonne-kilometres per vehicle compared to just 5.2 thousand for light commercials like utes and vans.

But, despite advanced safety technology and cabin refinements, the N Series remains a light truck and is unlikely to become an overnight hit with tradies wanting a work ute that can also handle family duties or a weekend getaway.

The company admits this and IAL head of sales, Craig White told GoAuto the decision to target ute buyers is about capturing a small cross-section of tradespeople who are better suited to a light truck based on use case alone.

“We believe at least 1000 of the quarter-of-a-million ute customers in Australia would be better suited to a light truck,” he said.

“A dual-cab ute certainly has its place, but once businesses begin to grow, payload limitations and storage space can quickly become challenges – the N Series Ready-to-Work range bridges that gap perfectly.

“You walk into a dealership, choose the model that suits your business and drive away with a professionally-built work vehicle ready to start earning its keep.”

IAL head of product management and chief engineer Simon Humphries added that the data supports the case for purpose-built trucks over smaller vehicles that are often pushed beyond their design limits.

“In many cases, operators are asking utilities and vans to perform tasks that they weren’t originally designed for,” Mr Humphries said.

“When you move into a light truck platform, you gain greater payload capacity, better load distribution and a vehicle designed from the ground up to handle commercial workloads.”

Isuzu offers a six-year/250,000km warranty on its N Series models, while the RTW bodies receive a three-year/unlimited kilometre warranty.
